Water Flow Calculation
If you live in the western states and irrigate farmland, have a fish pond at your house, or operate a business that diverts water from a public source such as a river, stream or spring, it is likely that you will need to file a claim for your water use with your state. In some cases, claims also need to be filed for groundwater wells. The water claim forms can be daunting, particularly with respect to technical information that you need to furnish. A typical water right claim form will ask for data concerning the flow of water diverted for your beneficial use. Typically, flow will be expressed in CFS (cubic feet per second), GPM (gallons per minute) or, in some cases, miner's inches. Miner's inches are not uniform throughout the states. For instance, in Arizona, California, Montana and Oregon, the miner's inch standard equals 40 cubic feet per second. New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota use a 50 CFS standard. Other states, such as Colorado, rely on a 38.4 miner's inch standard. Of course, there are other flow calculations that may be required on water right claims, such as gallons per annum, cubic feet per minute and so forth. However, the CFS, GPM and MI standards are typical. Flow is different from volume. Flow represents the rate at which water is diverted. Volume represents the actual amount of water that is used.

Contributor's Note
For the past 25 years, I have been involved in Arizona water law. Because calculating water flow and volume became such a tedious process over the years, I designed calculators that anyone can use.
